Fylde Cottage

Transforming a former railway cottage into a modern residence along the Fylde coast.

Transforming a former railway cottage into a modern residence along the Fylde coast.

Our client came to MOJO having never contemplated using an Architect, and knowing nothing about the process of renovating and extending her home. All she knew was that she wanted her home to reflect her eclectic personality and to help her to work from home.

The brief for Fylde Cottage evolved over time as we got to know the client better and she began to trust MOJO. She required a separate dining room and living space but wanted to restrict the changes to a newly installed kitchen.
As the project advanced we worked together to show her how multi use spaces could help give a much larger feel to the restricted area of the cottage.

Our vision was to take the traditional cottage and their outhouses and subvert their forms, using modern technology and materials to allow us to not only open up the existing cottage, but to extend to the rear. This allowed us to create distinct spaces around the clients home, and by changing the roof pitch, to enhance it with natural light.

We designed a new feature dining room in the centre of the new glazed extension, and created a breakfast bar which would also extend the usable area of the kitchen.
A new bathroom on the ground floor and study on the first floor gave the client a much needed retreat from her own clients she saw at her home.

We deliberately chose in collaboration with the client, to merge the old and new elements of the cottage, using bright white render to enhance the distinct form of the extension.

Each element of the small cottage had to be perfectly balanced in order to enhance the whole home, and through working together with the client we created a bold, distinct vision for how the old and new can work together in a home.

By subverting the traditional roof form, we allowed more natural light into the home, and created a unique extension.

Hopefully I'll be using their services for my next project....I would recommend anyone using their services.
