The Didsbury

A striking slice of modernity in Manchester's outskirts.

MOJO has created a bold, modern addition to the rear of a 1920’s family home in the heart of Didsbury.

MOJO was approached to help create and transform the home of two business owners and their family, as they felt that the existing house was too small and dark for their needs.

The client needed to create a large open plan kitchen, dining area and lounge to the rear of the house to help bring the garden into the home. They also required a new playroom for their children and separate snug. On the first floor they needed two additional bedrooms and a new master bathroom.

MOJO
worked with the clients to look at their tastes and quickly understood that they both loved bold, modern design; and how such lines and angles could contrast with the existing home.

We analysed the soar gain and sun-path to the rear of the home and adapted the elevations to reduce excessive heating whilst creating a distinct facade. The full height glazing helps to create rhythm across the rear of the extension, and opens up the views into the large wooden garden.

We have looked at using a mix of both wooden cladding and white render, which enhances the angular forms of the design, and connects the home to the clients admiration for modern scandinavian architecture.

The extension and redesign of the house has helped bring a busy family together, into a welcoming environment. The bold form stands out from the surrounding houses on the street and sets the standard for Modern architecture in the area.

Houses can come in many forms, and through MOJO’s and the client's confidence for Modern architecture, we created a dynamic vision of what a family home can be.
